Mt. Crested Butte Real Estate

The Basics

Known as “The Last Great Colorado Ski Town,” the town of Mt. Crested Butte is located in the Elk Mountain Range, just 3 miles north of the town of Crested Butte, and 31 miles north of the town of Gunnison. The base area sits at 9,380 feet, and looks up at the majestic peak of Mt. Crested Butte, which rises to 12,162 feet. Mt. Crested Butte is small, made up of only 800 year round residents.

Why It’s Special

Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) is widely regarded as one of the birthplaces of extreme freeskiing. Every year the resort hosts a plethora of events, including the Extreme Freeride World Tour, the Al Johnson Telemark Race, and the Grand Traverse (a randonee race from Crested Butte to Aspen). Some of the world’s most elite ski champions, such as Wendy Fisher and Aaron Blunck, call this mountain home. The resort has over 1500 inbound skiable acres with plans to expand in the coming years. The terrain is a great mix of beginner, intermediate, advanced, and of course, extreme runs. The resort also boasts a well-developed base area, and several on-mountain restaurants with unbeatable views. It’s easy to see why in 2014, Crested Butte was voted the #1 Best Ski Town in Powder Magazine’s Ski Town Throwdown. In 2018, Vail Resorts purchased the ski area and it is now accessible to Epic Pass holders.

In the summer, CBMR opens its Evolution Bike Park and transforms into a mountain biking haven. Two lifts shuttle bikers and hikers alike up to numerous trails and miles of single track. The resort also operates its Adventure Park, where families can enjoy zip lining, bungee trampolines, mini golf, and a climbing wall. Events the community looks forward to every summer are the free weekly Music on the Mountain concerts, the Annual Beer and Chili Festival, and the Crested Butte Music Festival. A free shuttle year round makes for convenient travel between the mountain, condo complexes, and town of Crested Butte.
